Chronic Diarrhea
Chronic Diarrhea
Diarrhea that lasts one month or more is considered to be "chronic." But, learning about your condition and with your doctor's help, you can get it under control — and help you get beyond the bathroom.

Some common causes of chronic diarrhea are:
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
  • Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis
  • HIV/AIDS infections and medications
  • Cancer and cancer treatments
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
IBS is a very common disorder, affecting up to one in five American adults. No one really knows the exact cause of IBS, but many things can trigger its symptoms, which include abdominal cramping, bloating, and diarrhea. Certain foods and drinks, like chocolate, dairy products, and alcohol can trigger IBS. Also, stress and anxiety are known to accompany the symptoms.

Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis
Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are kinds of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) and are very similar to one another. Both can cause inflammation of different parts of the digestive tract, which can lead to severe bouts of watery or bloody diarrhea and abdominal pain, among other symptoms.

HIV/AIDS Infections and Medications
The damage HIV causes to the immune system makes those with the disease more susceptible to infections, which can often cause diarrhea. In fact, the most common gastrointestinal symptom of HIV is diarrhea. It affects up to 90% of HIV patients and becomes worse as the immune system deteriorates. Diarrhea can also be a side effect of some antiretroviral drugs used to treat HIV and AIDS.

Cancer and Cancer Treatments
Some types of chemotherapy can damage the intestinal lining and cause diarrhea. Also, radiation, if given to your abdominal or pelvic region, may have diarrhea as a side effect. Some types of cancer like colon cancer, pancreatic cancer, and lymphoma can also cause diarrhea.

When to Visit Your Doctor
Causes of frequent diarrhea are extensive and can include such varied conditions as food intolerances, intestinal diseases, reaction to medicines, and functional bowel disorders.

If you think you suffer from recurring diarrhea or frequent diarrhea, or if you have any serious condition, talk to your doctor.

Please Note That the IMODIUM® Product Labels State:
Warning: Stop use and ask a doctor if diarrhea lasts for more than two days. The reason for this is that acute non-specific diarrhea generally responds to treatment within two days. If it persists beyond two days, you should talk to your doctor because you may have a serious medical condition.
